Building on rich heritage…

Our story began over 200 years ago as a family business in France.

Now, we have a presence on five continents and are the world’s leading maltster – with malts that contribute to beverages loved by millions of people across the globe.

1823

Brothers Frank and Hugh Baird establish the Great Canal Brewery to provide high quality beers to the growing Glasgow, Scotland population. Ten years later in 1832 the Bairds brothers set up their malting business to supply brewers, known today as Bairds Malt™.

1900

The Soufflet Malt™ story begins with Lucie Juchat, a humble grain merchant in rural France. The business is later run by her daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Jean Soufflet. In 1953 Jean Soufflet buys the Grande Malterie, a large malting plant in Nogent-sur-Seine, marking the company’s first steps into malting. The acquisition transforms Soufflet from a humble grain trader into a regional malt producer with growing ambitions.

1902

Meanwhile three malting companies in Ontario, Canada merge to form Canada Malting Company™ which goes on to purchase Great Western Malting in 1989 and Bairds Malting in 1990.

1912

After years of intense competition, between two pioneering families, the Barretts and the Burstons, they merge their businesses to strengthen their shared legacy in Australia’s brewing industry. Barret Bros and Burnston and Co Pty Ltd is born.

1934

Four local brewers in Vancouver, WA join and together form Great Western Malting™.

1991

David Cryer starts Cryer Malt™ in New Zealand, bringing European malts to Australasia brewers and distillers.  In 2017 Barrett Burston purchases Cryer Malt, creating a partnership that strengthens their ability to service Asia Pacific with quality malts.

1994

Soufflet acquires Malteries Franco-Belges, which already owns several malt sites in Northern France, Burgundy, the central region and Alsace. This makes it the single largest malt producer in France, and the leading French maltster.

1995-2010

Soufflet expands across Eastern and Central Europe and in 1998, builds a malting plant in Saint Petersburg. By 2002, Malteries Soufflet establishes operations in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. Later, Soufflet expands in Eastern Europe with a new malting plant in Romania.

2011

Growth intensifies with the acquisition of two malting plants in Bulgaria from the country’s leading brewer, the StarBev Group. In the same year, Durst Malz in Germany, a family business founded in 1824, is acquired.

2012

The company acquires a stake in Malteria do Valé in Brazil, the third largest beer market in the world.

2015

By 2015, Soufflet Malteries enters the British malt market, the second largest in Europe, through the acquisition of Molson Coors’ malting operations in Burton upon Trent, a town renowned for its brewing heritage.

2016

Malteries Soufflet enters India by acquiring the Alwar malting plant 150km from Delhi. India offers significant potential, not only as a beer market but also as the second-largest whisky producer in the world. Launch of first malt e-commerce site for craft brewers

2021

Malteries Soufflet enters Africa by building a zero-carbon malting plant in Ethiopia, Africa’s largest barley producer. Powered entirely by hydroelectric energy and supplied with 100% local barley, the site supports sustainability and farmer development.

2023

Malteries Soufflet acquires 100% of La Malterie du Château®, also known as Castle Malting ™, the oldest malting plant in Belgium founded in 1868.

2023

Malteries Soufflet acquires United Malt Group, the world’s fourth largest malt producer. The move aims to expand Soufflet’s presence in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, while accelerating its global strategy in the craft beer sector. Soufflet becomes the world’s largest maltster, with 41 facilities in 20 countries and an annual capacity of 3.7 million tonnes.
